Dental Implants Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Implants Information: Carmel Valley | Del Mar | San Diego

What are dental implants?

Implants are one the most attractive and long-lasting ways to replace missing teeth. The implants are titanium posts placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. This provides support for a replacement tooth or crown. Dental implants are superior to dentures and other solutions because they can last a lifetime and restore healthy dental function.

How long do dental implants last?

The titanium implants are permanent and should last a lifetime. They fuse with the jawbone and become a part of the jaw itself. The crowns can last anywhere from 20 to 30 years and sometimes longer, depending on wear and tear and whether you grind your teeth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

  • The success rate of dental implants is 95-98%
  • The implants last a lifetime, with no need for additional surgery
  • Implants secure the jawbone and prevent bone deterioration
  • The crowns can last 30 years or more
  • Dental implants are indistinguishable from your natural teeth
  • You can eat, drink, and speak normally
  • No need to worry about slipping dentures or bridges
  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • No special care is needed beyond regular brushing and flossing

Is there a downside to dental implants?

There is a risk of complications with any surgical procedure. However, with a 98% success rate, the risk is minimal with dental implant surgery. A few things to keep in mind when considering dental implants are:

  • In rare cases, the implant and jawbone don’t fuse, causing instability
  • There may be nerve or sinus damage
  • Post-operative infection
  • The long healing time required

How long does it take to get implants?

Dental implants usually require more than one visit and the collaboration of more than one specialist. Dr. Sidal performs the actual implant surgery; your dentist designs your replacement crowns, and a dental lab makes the crowns. Everyone works together to give you the best possible results.

The healing process after dental implant surgery takes between three and six months. This gives the jawbone time to integrate with the implants, forming a strong foundation for the abutments and crowns. During this time, temporary crowns are used, so you’re never without your teeth. Once the area heals, the permanent teeth are attached, and the work is complete.

The initial surgery takes anywhere from a half-hour to three hours, depending on how many implants you need and their location. Dr. Sidal will discuss this with you at your consultation.

Do I get my replacement teeth the same day?

You will not leave our office with missing teeth or gaps in your mouth. The day we place the implants, we will provide temporary crowns so you can smile and look great while waiting for the permanent crowns. Once your permanent teeth are ready, we remove the temporary crowns and attach the permanent ones.

How much do teeth implants cost?

There is no typical price for dental implants. The cost depends on several variables, including the jawbone condition, how many implants are needed, the location of each implant, your overall health, and other factors. Although the initial cost is higher than dentures and other treatment options, dental implants last a lifetime and require no special care. They are currently the only permanent way to replace missing teeth, giving you a lifetime of comfort. Financing options are available if needed.
