After Tooth Extraction
After tooth extraction, it is important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. You should bite on a gauze pad for one hour after your surgery. If excessive bleeding or oozing persists, insert another moist gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. Be sure not chew on the gauze or move it around while biting on it.
After the blood clot forms, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot as it aids healing. Do not rinse, spit or suck through a straw for 24 hours. These activities will dislodge the clot, cause bleeding and retard the healing process. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours as this will increase blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the extraction site.
After a tooth is extracted you may feel some discomfort and experience some swelling. An ice pack applied to the area will keep swelling to a minimum. Take pain medications as prescribed. The swelling usually subsides after 48 hours.
Use pain medication as directed. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them until completed, even if signs and symptoms of infection are gone. Drink lots of fluid and eat nutritious soft food on the day of the extraction. You can eat normally as soon as you are comfortable. Chew food away from the surgical site.
It is important to resume your normal dental hygiene routine after 24 hours. This should include brushing and flossing your teeth at least three times a day. This will speed healing, help prevent infection and keep your mouth fresh and clean.
After a few days you will feel fine and can resume your normal activities. If you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling for two to three days, or a reaction to the medication, call the office immediately at Scripps Medical Building, Carmel Valley Phone Number 858-793-3393.

Patient Review by Sara D
Best dental experience of my life as I feared any kind of dental work after a traumatic surgery as a teenager. Dr. Sidal took the time to understand my fear and explain all parts of the procedure (before, during and after) to put me at ease. I felt absolutely no pain while the work was being done and felt equally supported and comforted by the staff. Thank you for your care, kindness and patience.
